Wow! The first of May, it will be 10 years since I first started learning to work online. My dad had had a stroke and I went home to care for him. Since leaving the house to work would be next to impossible, I started researching other income ideas.

Then, I spent nine months learning enough - including how to build a web site using html - to launch my first site. Back then, everything had to be learned and done from scratch.

There were no site-builders or article composers. We actually had to do the work! We also had no multi-million dollar spammers. We could still yell at someone, and scare them half to death, if they sent us an email we didn't want.

I blame the anti-spammers for the spam problems we have today. They forced the spammers to become ever more clever until, now, they are impossible to beat. Used to be we could just holler at the senders of the couple of pieces we might get in one day!

On one hand, that seems like eons ago. On the other - have I REALLY been sitting on my butt in front of a computer for 10 YEARS?!

Of course, less than a year into my actual online experience, the iCop organization was born. "They" said it couldn't last, yet here we are all these years later!

The way I see it, success and growth come from change and expansion. Change gets a bit wearisome, sometimes, but it's necessary. So, now, we are about to take the NEXT step in iCop's services.

I'm thinkin' June.

In any event, I should be fully back with you on a weekly basis next week, and we'll get this thing rollin'.

Meanwhile, I Want to Give iCop Members a Heads Up

Sometime next week, I'll be doing the email address check. All members MUST respond to this check or be removed from iCop membership.

The subject of the email will read:

“iCop Address Check - Please Respond”

I don't see how you can miss that.

Be careful though. You can't just hit the reply button. You will need to fill in your current physical address and telephone number.

ISPs and Predatory Advertising

I mentioned a few weeks ago that the ISPs in Europe are selling information regarding their clients' online activities to advertisers.

You need to know, this is NOT only in Europe. It's also happening in the USA and, I'm sure, all over the world.

Yes - they really ARE spying on you, and this is no conspiracy theory! The ISPs can keep track of every single thing you do online and SELL that information. It's a threat to your privacy and it needs to be stopped!

Here's the information going out to the general public:

tinyurl.com/52gwsd

The University of Washington has been doing a study on this activity. The URL below will give you their results. But, if you read the entire page, you'll get a lot more information on exactly what's happening.

I was alerted to this situation by iCop member Barbara Moore in the UK:

------------
Hi jl,

All the excitement generated in the UK about snooping on web traffic is now starting to get into the USA press who are discovering just how far this technology is spreading on your side of the pond.

tinyurl.com/4wnskl

I know you are busy with other things, but I see this as really important for anyone who has a website.

In the UK we are lucky, both the person doing the browsing and the owner of the website have to agree to the content viewed being intercepted. We are looking for ways to prevent our websites being used as part of the profiling process.

Why? - because anyone who writes a relevant page, with good keyword densities and meaningful TITLE and META tags is enabling the profiling software to determine appropriate advertising channels for our visitors.

The effect of this is that when our visitor surfs off to another (ad network partner) site, the first thing they are likely to see is an advert from one of our competitors even though the site they are visiting has nothing to do with our market segment.

Our websites are copyright to us. There is nothing which says that someone else can come and use our work to improve their ability to earn money from displaying adverts.

I don't know how these systems are being sold to the US although it looks like changes to the T&C is the only notification customers receive - if they ever visit the website to discover that the T&Cs have changed since last read.

In UK it is being sold as improved privacy and in full compliance with our Data Protection Act while not providing any information, other than what can be ascertained from patent applications, about the deep packet inspections and what data is actually recorded. And, no one is answering how they can claim to not read email when there are so many non https webmail suppliers.

Regards,

Barbara Moore

We Depend on YOU

I would like to respectfully request that people STOP jumping all over me when finding UNLINKED iCop seals on web sites - or when finding them on sites with no physical contact information. Why the hell anyone would assume an unlinked seal is on a legitimate iCop member's site is beyond me.

First ... The seal is most likely stolen and the site does NOT belong to a real member. Not being psychic, I don't know where to find those.

Second ... The occasional moron has been known to slip through and become an iCop member. It takes a while to catch them - but we do.

For instance, we recently lost a member who was a former police officer. However, he was a police officer who, obviously didn't believe rules applied to him. I can't help but wonder if he's the same way about laws.

He submitted a couple of web sites to display the iCop seal. Then, he decided to simply place the seal on unregistered sites - with NO contact information.

His excuse to me was that people had been stealing his entire sites, thus violating his copyrights. Okay - that's easy enough to resolve. But, he complained they could run a physical address through Google to find other sites of his. Therefore, he decided to ignore iCop rules and place the seal wherever he wished, SANS contact information.

Well, gee, I hate to be suspicious, but based on his behavior, I suspect he had other reasons for hiding out.

SO - Two Things ...

If you are a subscriber to the Trade Journal and you find a suspicious iCop seal out there, please let me know politely. I depend on your help to track these jack-asses down. Please don't attck me for what someone else is doing wrong!

If you are an iCop member, don't make the mistake of putting that seal on a site we don't have registered for you. It will cost you your membership when I find out. And, I WILL find out!

I really want to hear from you! Tell me what you think!

Leaving You With a Smile

Grandma in Court

Lawyers should never ask a Missouri grandma a question if they aren't prepared for the answer.

In a trial, a southeast Missouri small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand.

He approached her and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"

She responded, "Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a young boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The lawyer was stunned! Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?"

She again replied, "Why, yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him."

The defense attorney almost died. The judge asked both Counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, Said, "If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you to the electric chair."
