Well, I found out one thing last week ... GoDaddy and iCop have a lot in common. People either love us, or they hate us! Well, ME, anyway. Wink

After my article about what GoDaddy did to one of their customers, I got email! So, allow me to clarify one thing right now.

I wrote that article because it was a perfect example why people should READ the Terms and Condition (TOS) of web sites before doing business with them. How many of you DO? Not many, I'll wager.

On the other hand, I AM also known to tell my people about companies that give their customers a raw deal. And, unless you think the person who reported that situation is a liar, it was a raw deal.

I received email from people who have used GoDaddy for years and LOVE them. I received one from someone looking at the bigger picture - that there may other registrars even worse than the report on GoDaddy.

I also received email from other people who felt they got a raw deal from GoDaddy. Two of those were even WORSE than the situation I reported. In BOTH these stories, there couldn't possibly BE “another side.” BLATANT B.S. and disregard for the customer.

Sorry, but when I see THREE reports of such extreme bad behavior on the part of any internet business, that's a HUGE signal to me to stay away. Two of those reports came JUST from my reader base!

In nearly eight years, I've NEVER had three reports of bad behavior on the part of ANY iCop member - and we provide a page for reports to be made! Can you imagine how many customers have been serviced by iCop members over that period of time without three complaints against any one member?

Actually, I suppose I really DO have a bit of a problem with this company. “Domains by Proxy” is owned by the CEO of GoDaddy. This is a company where people can register domain names completely anonymously.

First of all, most of you know how I feel about anonymity online. I believe the owners of domain names/web sites should be public knowledge.

Why would any legitimate business want to hide? Hiding usually means people have something TO hide.

Second, every single time I see an illegal use of the iCop seal - and can NOT get it removed - you can bet the domain it's sitting on is registered with Domains by Proxy!

I have NO way to find the owner's name, address or telephone number, since GoDaddy's or Wild West Domains' physical contact information will be used instead. My email will be ignored.

Makes you question the motives of the folks who use Domains by Proxy, doesn't it? I am NOT saying they're all bad. But, Domains by Proxy gives the bad ones a way to hide.

I'm just sayin' ...

Pamela Heywood has an article in her list of Marketing Tips at http://www.7cmarketing.com I believe it would be helpful for most people to read. The title is, “How to Use There, Their and They're.”

In the article you'll find a link to wikihow.com that gives the tricks that help you know which word to use. Unless you're absolutely sure you use those three words correctly, I strongly suggest you look at it.

Speaking of which, I have my own pet peeve about language. (I'm betting there, their, there is Pam's.) I don't really know if it's laxity or just pitiful education, but, it seems to me, folks take a lot lee-way these days.

The one that bugs me most is the misuse of “that” and “who.” I even see this one in TV scripts, done by legislators, college graduates; it seems like everyone does it. And, it never fails to, literally, jar me!

When speaking of PEOPLE doing something, the word is WHO:

“It was the fourth-graders WHO (not that) had a bake sale.”

When speaking of a thing doing something, the word is THAT:

“It was the four-grade THAT (not who) had a bake sale.”

Every time I hear - or see - people referred to as “that,” I cringe. I don't know - it just doesn't seem that tough to me not to objectify people.

I've even seen articles written about how it's okay to misuse language online. Things like, it's okay to end a sentence with a preposition which, I admit, IS sometimes hard (but not impossible) NOT to do.

Now, maybe most people don't see the sentence ending with a preposition. But, sorry. Certainly, the rest is NOT okay.

I agree with Pam about misuse of language when she writes, “It gives an amateurish impression that does nothing to help instill trust” online. It can and DOES cost people sales.

Here's a little brush-up mini-course for you:

The Internet Is Not Magic
by Bob Osgoodby

Any advertising program should be geared toward one goal and that is to make sales. Your ads in Online Newsletters or Web Classifieds also have one purpose, and that is to get folks to request more information. Here is where your Web Pages shine. They are your silent salespeople who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Have you ever noticed that in every shopping mall, there is what is referred to as an anchor store? This is normally a large store that attracts a lot of customers, and the other stores in the mall benefit from the "spill over" customers who go there.

As far as your online marketing is concerned, your Web Page should be the anchor for your sales efforts. This is the place where you want your potential customers to go for information about your Company. This is where you can make or break your sale.

Many people make serious mistakes when designing their Web Page. Let's face it - if someone comes to your Web Page, they are looking for information. While beautiful pictures are nice to look at, they seldom have a reason to exist on your Web Page. Why? Because they take too long to load, a visitor will quickly become frustrated, and then "click away" to something else - a lost opportunity.

If you want a presence on the Web, your design goals should be simple. You should have a page that loads quickly and doesn't require the visitor to page down to get your primary message.

Face it - you have seconds to capture their attention. The page should be attractive, and stimulate the person to page down, or link to other pages. This is where you can then expand on what you are trying to present. Once you get them to page down, or click on a link to another of your pages, the odds are that they will read it.

So, if you want to design your own web pages or contract with someone to do it, what should be your first steps?

First - browse the web looking for web sites that you like. If the page loads quickly and is attractive, it is a candidate for your design consideration - bookmark it. After you find several examples, and if you are HTML proficient, download your favorite and look at it with your web page design software. Can you use the same techniques that they used?

Do not use any of their graphics or text that are included in the web page. These are normally copyrighted and could cause you a "heap" of trouble. If you are not HTML proficient and want to contract with a third party, inform them of the web site you like. This can save them a lot of false starts in their design efforts for you.

Second - provide content that might encourage visitors to come back to your site. This content should change on a periodic basis, and does not have to be limited to your Web Site. A News Ticker for example can be something you can use, as well as a link to the Weather Channel.

Finally, you have to market your web site. Your URL and E-mail address should not only be publicized online, but offline as well. Put them on your letter head, your business card, your offline advertising - anyplace where people can see them. We send out postcards with specials all the time - you can bet they are there.

The Internet is not magic - but if you include these basic steps, it just might be for you.

Leaving You With a Smile

RETARDED GRANDPARENTS
(This was actually reported by a teacher)

After Christmas, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their holiday away from school. One child wrote the following:

We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa. They used to live in a big brick house but Grandpa got retarded and they moved to Florida. Now they live in a tin box and have rocks painted green to look like grass. They ride around on their bicycles and wear name tags because they don't know who they are anymore.

They go to a building called a wrecked center, but they must have got it fixed because it is all okay now, and do exercises there, but they don't do them very well. There is a swimming pool too, but in it, they all jump up and down with hats on.

At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out.

They go cruising in their golf carts! Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And, they eat the same thing every night --- early birds.

Some of the people can't get out past the man in the dollhouse. The ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center for pot luck.

My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment, and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too. When I earn my retardment, I want to be the man in the doll house. Then I will let people out so they can visit their grandchildren.
