Message From jl

Having just passed this organization's 8th birthday, and going on nine years online, I find myself in a bit of a reflective state. These eight years have, on the one hand, passed so quickly. On the other hand, eight years seems an eon ago.

Every few years, it seems I need to reinvent iCop. And, that's okay. Everything needs to grow. That's what I'm thinking about, now - the next step in our growth.

Last time, I went to the people and asked you what you wanted. Let's do that, again.

The basic premise won't change. This will always be an organization of online business owners who are interested in being known as the MOST ethical on the Web.

We've done that well. Similar groups have started, then, fallen by the wayside. The thing is you have to actually BE what you profess to be in order to gain the credibility it takes for the long term.

The thing I regret most is being too closely associated with the “internet marketing” crowd. Every person who sells anything online is technically, of course, doing “internet marketing.”

But, there are those who sell real products and/or services - and those who sell crap. And, I'm sorry, but those known as "internet marketers" are becoming ever more sleazy.

I've managed to keep us out of the groups referred to as the “gurus.” That was easy since so many of them are sitting ducks for criticism. Too many of them operate always too close the edge. And, I too often say so.

Since my goal is to show absolute integrity with what I profess to believe, I often fall into the role of persona non gratis amongst the gurus. This may very well have hurt iCop's income, but it never hurts our image. In fact, it enhances it.

Last week, I saw something done by a marketer I've long held in high esteem. It turned my stomach. Just goes to show ... if you lie with the dogs long enough, you can easily become one.

This organization needs to move away from ANYTHING that smacks of the term "internet marketing." There's a difference in solid business owners and those hopping from one junk product to the next, hoping for the magic bullet to make them rich overnight.

"Internet marketers" remind me of the fly-by-night morons who rent space in little strip malls, then break their leases and move out in the night. iCop is meant for REAL companies with solid business plans.

It's true - you can't change the spots on a leopard! I've tried for years to clean up this industry, and it can't be done. I've even watched people who started out with high ethical standards get sucked into the downward spew of garbage going into the drain.

I've seen many hotshot newcomers join iCop. Then, as they take up with the seminar crowd, the sleeze starts setting in. Soon, they no longer belong in iCop, and they drop out.

That's the good news. The bad news is that we attract them to begin with. Something needs to change on that score!

SOOOO ... I'm ready to hear YOUR thoughts. Just drop me an email and tell me:

  • What you would like to see stay the same with iCop?
  • What you would like to see changed - or added?
  • What you would like to see removed?

We'll discuss some of your requests to get further input. And, this I will promise you. By March 1, 2008, there will be MANY changes - not the least of which will be the ability to be accepted as an iCop member at all!

Product Alert

I saw a product advertised that bears an alert. The product may be excellent at what it claims to do. I don't know. But, it also doesn't matter.

Here's a line from the sales pitch:

"You Will Be Blown Away At How Easy It Is To Generate Thousands of Incoming Links With Just The Click Of A Button!"

Obviously, this product is being sold to do something the easy way, i.e., get incoming links - to raise your Google rank.

I didn't even pay any attention to what this product costs. It would just about have to be free to give it any value. Why? Because, it's time-limited.

How long do you think it will be before Google catches on to this process? Then, how much longer before they change their own processes to eliminate it?

In fact, I wouldn't use it if it WERE free. Google looks at this kind of thing as spamming their system. They want to see incoming links generated because they lead to REAL content. NOT something mechanically generated by some software designed to “fool” Google's ranking system.

Please, THINK before you spend your hard-earned money on something that could hurt you in the long-run. And, quick-fixes usually do!

"Enjoy the Benefits"
by Bob Osgoodby

Can you make money on the Web? If you listen to the people selling bulk email addresses, you are sure of it. In the cold light of day, however, the only people making money from this operation are the people selling the addresses. But the unsuspecting queue up and plop down their hard earned cash only to find that 15 million people really aren't interested in buying their program.

So where are they going wrong? They may not have a product or service that is of interest to anyone, let alone 15 million. But the hucksters who promote this compare it to a "scatter gun" and say you will "hit" some prospects. "One tenth of one percent," they claim, "could bring you hundreds of thousands of dollars," and this is true if you have something people are willing to buy.

But there is also one thing they neglect to tell you. Do you have any idea how long it would take to email 15 million people? Most ISPs have limits on the number of emails you can send at one time – usually around 50 or so at a time – let’s be liberal and say 1000 a day. At that rate it would take about 41 years, working 7 days a week. But don’t worry about that – your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will most likely have canceled your account for spamming in the first week or so. And guess what? When your account is canceled, if your web site is hosted by them, it will also go away.

But, they say that they will do the mailing for you. You will certainly get a copy of your ad. But did the other 14,999,999 get it? Was it sent at all? You have no way of knowing. If it was, your web site under the best of circumstances, will most likely be black listed. When a web site is black listed, no one who uses that ISP will be able to send or receive email. How long do you think your ISP will tolerate that?

A cursory examination of the web will reveal numerous programs that consist primarily of people trying to sell something they got hooked on. Basically they are trying to recover their money by finding other suckers that are just as dumb as they were.

Are there good programs on the web? Sure, but for goodness sake, use some common sense. Just because it is on the web doesn't make it an automatic money generator. You must have a product, service or opportunity that will pass the basic credibility test. If people don't think it is a good deal, they will simply "click away."

But, there are people making money - they have found their "niche market." So what is your niche? Is there something that you know a lot about, perhaps a hobby? Can you produce a product that might be of interest to others?

If you want to make a living on the internet, you must find your niche. One of the things that always frustrates someone who does have a product, is the lack of time to sell it. Why not approach a few people who do have a good product, and offer to have them represent you for a piece of the action? Someone who has an existing "mall" might be a good candidate. Since you will be controlling the delivery of the "goods", it will be pretty hard for them "beat" you out of the money due.

Finding a niche is key on the 'Net. Those who do, with reasonable advertising, can enjoy the benefits.

Leaving You With a Smile

Grandma's Birth Control Pills

The doctor that had been seeing Myrtle, a now 84-year-old woman, for most of his life, died shortly after he retired.

At her next annual checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her.

As the young doctor was looking through these, his eyes grew wide as he realized she had a prescription for birth control pills.

"Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are BIRTH CONTROL pills?

"Yes, they help me sleep at night."

"Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely NOTHING in these that could possibly help you sleep!"

She reached out and patted the young Doctor's knee.

"Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16 year old granddaughter drinks . . .

And believe me, it helps me sleep at night."
