My ol' buddy, Rick Beneteau, rather dryly reminded me, “Well, you wrote The MASTER COURSE, jl.” And, he's right - I DID! Unfortunately, that doesn't mean I'm super-human. I still make the same mistakes as everyone else and need to be reminded of what I know. In fact, if you know someone who is very into spirituality, creating our own reality, managing stress, or any of those fields - and if they act as if they have all the answers and are always centered themselves - RUN, don't walk, as far away from them as you can get. There's a reason why the true spiritual gurus all live in isolation - up on their mountain tops. They remove themselves from the every-day business of families, business, politics, finances, etc. - the stuff the rest of us have to deal with. I'll admit I probably care too much - and I don't know why. It's often about things so HUGE, I have little to say about them. For instance, last week, a woman was walking beside a two-lane highway here in Louisiana. She was hit by a car. Her body was thrown into the middle of the highway, where she was hit by several other cars. NOT ONE CAR STOPPED! Not ONE! What was even worse, they reported it on the News as if it were barely newsworthy. What scared me MOST was my thought that I CAN understand how this happened. There is so little accountability demanded of people these days, this IS what it's coming to, and I've seen it coming for a number of years. It's easy to say it all starts at the top. But, who is responsible for what we have at the top? In the upcoming USA nominations for the next President of the United States, we have a HUGE field of candidates. Two of them - count them, TWO - would be accountable to the people of this country. One of them is running as a Democrat and one is running as a Republican. So, it doesn't matter what label we stick on them. The sad truth is ... NEITHER of them has a prayer of getting their respective nominations. Why? Because they tell the truth and refuse to play the game! No, I'm not going to name them, so don't write to me about it. I have no intention of getting involved in any political conversations. Those are never rational conversations, and I have enough hysteria in my life as it is. My point is simply that, when I look around at what life has come to in my own country, it's easy to see how internet marketing has also taken up residence in the sewer. And, I can't honestly say I didn't see it coming. Hell, it was ALWAYS there - right from the beginning when (now canonized) internet marketers started out using spam and teaching others to do it, too. I have to remember this is the number one reason I began working online using a pseudonym. I didn't want folks from my past lives identifying me with internet marketing. I used a pen name because I didn't want to have my good name sullied. It was embarrassing. Of course, I have to humbly remember - I also thought I could change it. MOST naïve of me! And, not a very quick study, was I? I feel like I've spent way too much time in the dregs of an industry. I don't really even understand how I got there - I never intended to. But, it's my own fault and I accept responsibility. I've allowed iCop to lie here in the mud for way too long.
What I can NOT do about the state of internet marketing is change it. What I CAN do - at least as far as iCop is concerned - is cut those involved in a certain definition of it out of the herd. So, the first thing we'll need to do is DEFINE “internet marketing.” For instance ... This past week, I paid particular attention to the sales email I received. Not spam - things I've requested. How many actual products do you think I've been offered? I accept digital products as legitimate - as long as they serve some purpose other than making the creator rich. I received precious FEW offers of legitimate products! What I DID receive was an endless stream of crap promising to make me rich. This includes:
“How to Make Money on the Internet” systems And, BTW - there ARE no business building "secrets." They've been public knowledge for centuries. So, I guess I'll define “internet marketing” as anything being sold with the BUYERS' perceived goal of making big money. We may call these “information products” but, c'mon, they're selling freakin' AIR! Everybody can't be an expert! And, it's stinking air, at that! Basically, they're passing gas! In paying closer attention, I couldn't believe I actually sit here and allow myself to be assaulted (not to mention insulted) by such things as ...

------------ That last one was sent to a full list - which seems quite unnecessary if he had a waiting list of over 2,000 - especially since the claim is he will only sell 100 spots now! The thing is - I could pull crap like that out of nearly every sales letter I see. “Internet marketers” have moved so far away from anything ethical, it isn't even a joke any longer. I understand that, even in the print world, "How to ..." books are legitimate products and big sellers. But everyone can NOT be THE expert - in ANY arena!
DEMC is a highly regarded internet marketing ezine. Been around for a LONG time! Yet I received an “insert” (defined as solo ad) last week for a program that appears to be nothing more than a sophisticated chain letter/pyramid system! I checked out the web site. It was all about "free money," "leveraging" - "gifting" - gonna get ya $3,500 a DAY if you do the deal! This thing was so slick it was “signed” by “Christian.” I looked it up, and the site owner's name is definitely NOT Christian! So, maybe that was meant to be suggestive as to his character? He had a video of opening up envelopes and pulling out hundred dollar bills. PROOF! I really feel sorry for the people he bilks, because when he goes down, they'll go down right along with him! Legally! And, it shows how easy it is for publishers to forget to check their advertisers. (I'm assuming that's what happened here.) We get desensitized to the B.S. sales pitches. I'm not going to go on and on, and on and on, about this every week. But, I DO believe it would be a good idea for those who wish to display the iCop seal to give careful consideration to their products and/or services. You may need to rethink your business if you want to keep a legitimate face on it. Look at your products - do you have legitimate products? What service(s) do you actually provide? I looked at our directory. It's going to have a huge bite taken out of it. I don't want anything in there that isn't a legitimate product or service. I'll be contacting every single iCop member individually to see if we need to make adjustments. That is part of why this upgrade of our organization will take so long. There will also have to be a certain amount of “grandfathering in.” But, even that will come with conditions. iCop is about to become a very exclusive organization! By the 1st of March, it will become a major undertaking to be accepted as a new iCop member, at all.
